15 Nov 2023 The observatory for ESO's 'Extremely Large Telescope' being built in the Atacama desert and Europe, is reported as being 50% completed. The ELT is going to be the largest single aperture, optical telescope in the World and, like all big scopes nowadays, will have adaptive optics. It may be at altitude, but there is still some atmosphere in the way which will scatter some light and so decrease clarity. But it should remain active for years, is easily maintained and is protected from the micrometeorites that degrade space telescopes. ESO expects first light in five years time. Can't wait!
